You might be wondering what is a standing seam metal profile? Well, the panel profile refers to the shape and how the panels are seamed together. Our Abbotsford roofing contractors will help you decide which profile is best for your property. The decision is influenced by factors such as the roof type and pitch, architectural features, surroundings and weather conditions. When it comes to a standing seam metal roof, there are three main types of roofing profiles: Snap lock, mechanical lock and nail strip.
There are a few types of snap lock profiles, but they all have one thing in common; the metal roofing panels snap down together on one side. Our metal roof installers secure the panels to the plywood deck using a clip that locks underneath the panel. When the panels are longer than 40 feet, we use float clips, which allow the roof metal to freely expand and contract. The best thing about a snap-lock or click-lock standing seam system is that no manual or mechanical seaming is needed during installation.
There are two prominent types of mechanical lock profiles: single lock (90-degree seam) and double lock (180-degree seam). Both profiles are roll-formed with edges that are aligned. The metal panels can be locked together manually or mechanically. Whichever way it’s done, the edges are bent and the two panels are fastened together. Mechanical seamed panels have a hidden clipping system which enables them to have great wind load capacity.
Nail strip, also known as nail flange or fastener flange, is a type of metal standing seam system. It's made up of flat panels with raised ribs, resulting in long, sleek roof lines. Unlike a snap lock panel, which is clipped to the roof deck, the nail strip is fastened directly to the deck through the male leg. Once the panel is secure, the female leg snaps over, concealing the fasteners. This system eliminates the need for retainer clips while also hiding the fasteners.
